Who is a good web hosting provider for this?

January 10th, 2009

I plan on starting a website that will gain a lot of users over time.

Should I start out on shared hosting and then upgrade to a virtual private server?

Or is there another way to go about this?

I assume that my website will be small at first but through time it will grow

I recommend you to register domain name(s) with a 3rd party like: http://www.namecheap.com
Then choose a host which allows you to pay monthly like:
Godaddy Deluxe plan
http://www.hosttell.com/godaddy

Disk space: 150 GB
Bandwidth: 1500 GB

Price: $6.99 (for monthly payments)

Then, when you’re ready to switch to a VPS,
you just have to copy your site to it, point your domain name
to its name servers, and cancel your godaddy plan.
This is very easy to setup, and it works great!

P.S. When you start to look for a VPS check:
http://www.slicehost.com (from $20/month)
and later
http://www.mosso.com (from $100/month)

P.P.S. If you want to start with a shared hosting but wanna pay a year upfront I recommend Dreamhost http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html
They offer the best plan/options for the price.
(especially if you use a promo code)

Their standard price is $9.95/month ($119.40/year)
but you can use the promo code PLUS and get
$50 discount +2 Free domain names.

Disk space: Unlimited
Bandwidth: Unlimited
2 Free domain names
Unlimited domains and subdomains
Price: $5.78/month ($69.40/year)

Since it is very easy to change what server a domain name points to, I would go cheap and lower powered till you run past the limits of the server. If the host is large enough they can simply offer you a higher cost plan and transparently move your website to a more powerful server as needed.

You need to make sure that if your doing a lot of processing on the server that your sharing that your website won’t starve the others. That is part of the host managers job but you need to consult with them.

Not all Hosts will allow you do use custom scripts and/or databases at the lower price levels.

If you are over 18, and have a valid credit card, Microsoft is hosting free with Domain registration free and there’s one catch so to speak. You have a very small advertisement on your pages that indicates “hosted by Microsoft Office Live”

Works very well for me, have had 100% uptime with this host. And with my background in QA, and Networking, I’m not the easiest guy to please.

VPS or Virtual Private Servers are more expensive. Starts with shared web hosting, when your web site reach the point that can pay for it self then switch to VPS. Hi, websites can be a costly Business and over time can cost a lot of money to run and maintain. I create sites for a living, there is no point getting a high powered server to start with start small and save money to invest into advertising. Then when your site does grow then move into the power full equipment. If your looking for a web host ill add the guy i use in my sources. he creates packagers to suit your needs, most of his packagers cost around £5 a year (see link below)

    Hope this helps
