Please help me about ASP .NET 2.0 session variables…?

January 6th, 2009

Hi, and thank you about your attention to my question.

I have developed a web site using .NET framework 2.0 and upload it on a free hosting package provided by www.somee.com.

I had use a session variable which takes boolean values. I defined that like this in session onstart event in global.asax.

Session.Add["MyVar",false];

And I set this session variable in other side of my process.

But when I refresh the page which gets the session variable value, after a few tries the session variable loses it's value and I encounter to starting point. I don't change the value of that variable in to false anywhere in my application.

And let me mention that I didn't face this problem while I was debugging the website on my own pc (localhost).

Is there any block set which I should define or modify in Web.Config, if so what is that, and if not what can I do?

Be Succeed,
Babax.

Session variables only last 20min with default settings. You can adjust theses settings in your Web.Config file the server you are hosting on may have settings that override this or not enough memory reserved/available to maintain this. You may be able to accomplish what you need using a browser cookie or maintaining the information in a database.

Why do people say "asp.net/mssql is expensive to use and php/mysql is free"? does microsoft charges to use asp

January 5th, 2009

isn't asp just written on a regular notepad that most computers have, at godaddy.com (website host) it costs the same to get 10 mysql or 1 mssql database, so what else is needed to use asp.net/mssql?

I read a license needs to be bought, is that just like buying permission to use their technology? what would happen if you use it with out a license?

Well yes, you can host an ASP.NET application at go daddy and its not as expensive as you thought.

Expense comes when you want to buy your own MS Sql server, Windows OS and host the application on your own server.

Yes, in theory you can develop ASP.NET applications without buying an expensive environment like Visual Studio. Notepad is certainly not the best options. Visual Studio has a free version called Visual Studio express version.

What would happen if you use a Microsoft product without a license? All I know is that It's plain illegal, and you shouldn't, unless you live in a country where they can't sue you.

Hope this helps.

How can I develop a db-driven website in ASP.NET without buying db server software?

January 3rd, 2009

I'm building a website in ASP.NET VB (not going to change language at this point), and I'd like to interact with either MS SQL server or MySQL. In developing the site, I need to test my code locally before deploying on the internet. How can I achieve this without paying for the same software that will be used by the web hosting server? Can I download MS SQL Server Compact Edition, code to that, then just upload to a site using SQL Server? Or is there some way to develop for free with MySQL?

The free database engines from Microsoft are fully compatible with SQL server, the only differences are the supplied tools, the maximum database size and the number of connections.
MySQL is free so you can download and install exactly the same software as used by your web host.

What is the deal with open source technologies? Are they really free?

January 1st, 2009

Take for example the scripting languages php and asp.net.
Php, as we all know, is an open source technology (free). However, isn't asp.net free as well? After all, you can download its development environment for free (Visual Web Developer).
True, web hosting companies will usually charge you a bit more for an account hosting asp.net but they still charge you for an account hosting php. You can also find free asp.net tutorials online. So maybe I am missing something here but I don't see it, what makes php free when compared to asp.net? Are open source technologies really free when compared to their "non-free' counterparts?

Well ASP.net only runs on Windows and that isn't free.

When it comes to PHP, it runs on about anything, including free OS's.

I am a PHP developer for a NASDAQ company, believe me, anything to do with microsoft has mad licensing fees. Start looking at an Internet connection license for MSSQL.

With all open source software, you can download the full source code and alter any piece of it you would like. You can in no way alter .net, and if you could you would be violating licensing.
