What is a Microsoft SQL database useful for?

October 30th, 2009

Hi

My internet server hosting package says I have a 150mb ‘Free’ Microsoft SQL database if I install it.

I cannot think what is would be useful for!

An online forum maybe like Vbulletin?

Is this the only use an SQL database is for?

Thanks!

SQL is a database .. it’s used to hold "variable" data that you might wish to display on your web pages ..

For example, say you created a web page called "My Holiday photo’s" .. well that’s OK when you only have a few photo’s and they don’t change very often …. but every time you want to ‘add’ extra photo’s it means changing the web page .. and what happens if you decide to add an extra ‘catagory’ or even re-arrange the photo’s ?

Say you decide to split "Holiday photo’s 2007" into "My holiday in Greece" and "My Spanish holiday" ?? This would mean a lot of work re-arranging ‘links’ on the page(s).

A better approach is to code the page so it looks into an SQL ‘table’ and finds a list of the (current) photo’s and what ‘categories’ etc. to display .. and even how to generate (lay out) the page and how many pages exist …

In other words, the web page is made ‘dynamic’ .. then, instead of changing the page every time, all you need to do is add to the SQL table …

Top 3 Deadly Traps you Can Avoid When Choosing an Inexpensive Web Hosting Plan

October 29th, 2009

Believe it or not, most newbie webmasters usually get confused and fall into one or all of these 3 deadly traps when they choose their first web hosting plan:

Trap #1: Finding the cheapest web hosting in the world. This is the perhaps the worst mistake you could ever made when choosing a web hosting for your website. While it is true that you can potentially save a lot of money by finding a web hosting service which only cost 1/10 of the market price, in reality it’s hardly worth it.

Web hosting companies which offers web hosting services at ridiculously low price are most likely scam or poor quality web hosting. Think about it, to run a web hosting business, you will need to at least pay for the bills for electricity, bandwidth, hardware and salary. If the monthly fee is only 1 dollar how on earth can the business survive?

What if one of the hard disk went dead? Will they have the money to replace one quickly? Even if they are able to do it, in most cases your web hosting account will most likely be placed together with a few thousands other sites. This is actually very bad because the loading speed of your site will be very sluggish.

Trap #2: Complete trust on the sales page. Don’t trust everything you read on the sales page. If a web hosting plan stated that they will give you 5gb of web space, don’t really take it for real. Every web hosting company always say that they have an uptime of 99.9 percent but how many of them actually fulfill that promise? Don’t take the chance, always read a review or seek a past or current user of that web hosting service before making the final decision.

Trap #3: Treating guarantee as useless. Without guarantee, you will have a hard time asking for a refund if they provide a lousy web hosting service. Always choose an inexpensive web hosting plan that has at least a 30 days money back guarantee. Most major web hosting company do provide a money back guarantee policy and will happily refund your money if you find that their web hosting service didn’t live up to your expectation.

Those are the 3 deadly traps that you want to avoid when choosing an inexpensive web hosting plan. For more information on inexpensive web hosting, you can read the inexpensive web site hosting article.

Blog Hosting. the Standards of Quality

October 29th, 2009

The world changes. So do the life and work standards. The standards of IT business change very quickly. All that seemed to be up-to-date as recently as yesterday, today seems to be absolutely fusty.

Even if we take a look at Internet growth, one can notice how the attitute towards network projects is being changed. The most dramatic example is web sites that are being hosted on free web hosting platforms.

In the early 21st century those web sites were quite popular. All social gropus - schoolboys, students, office workers, writers used to use free web hosting services. Often even corporate web sites were hosted on free hosting.

However the time passed, Internet “grew up” and the standards have changed. Webmasters started to think not only about creating a web site but more about creating a professional web project for which free web hosting is apparently not suitable. People started to register domain name, oder paid reliable web hosting services and hire professional web designers and developpers.

This trend has changed the attitute towards web sited hosted on a free web hosting. Now more and more people think that one should better have no web site at all that the one hosted on a free hosting with million of ads.

And that is right. Everything should be solid, reliable and professional. And web hosting is no exception.

Blogosphere came to this idea much later. If nowadays web site on a free hosting may call depreciation, the blog hosted in a free blog platform is still considered to be a normal thing.

How long do you give this state of things? Definitely a short while. The most long-sighted bloggers right now register a domain name to create a stand-alone blog on it and search for a blog hosting services. Since they new, shortly this wil become a generally accepted standard of blogosphere.

Transferring blog on another hosting is like moving in a new flat. The more things - the harder is the move itself. The backlinks and PR might be lost. It is also hard to moove blog archive because of internal links in blog posts.

That is why the earlier you move - the better. And the best thing is start from the very beginning with the paid quality blog hosting with Wordpress preinstalled and free domain name to create your own stand alone blog.

As stand alone blog will give you numerous opportunities such as real independence on a paid web hosting and a great chance for unlimited income!

Content Management Systems - a Way of Life

October 29th, 2009

I remember the days when everybody needed to learn HTML to build a small site with a few pics on it, some phrases and an weird-looking background. Php was available, but was rarely used and mostly by ‘professionals’, so it wasn’t really ‘weapon of choice’ for the masses.

How did it start?

Actually it started when the web developers started providing php and database driven websites at a low cost to the market. Soon the competition grew and free limited or trial versions were offered to boost sales. The demand wasn’t very big by today’s standards, but for that time it was huge. Soon enough free systems saw daylight and they grew ever since.

How is it looking now?

The number of content management software (free and comercial) available today is huge and it is growing exponentialy due to the increase of internet usage. Also the development of php and database software offers more and more features and at the same time makes it easier to use.

Why use a CMS?

There are some that say “I want to create my website from scratch so that i’ll be familiar with every aspect of it and i won’t be begging for support when my site has serious issues”. In most cases this is a bad approach to this subject and here’s a few ideas why:

1) If you are not entirely familiar with the programming language you are using it might turn out that the script has lots of bugs , either it is consuming lots of server resources, thus creating a big hosting problem.

2) It will take a lot of time to create the code from scratch

3) The features probably won’t even come close to the complex content managent software already on the market today

The advantages of using a CMS are, on the other side, quite obvious:

1) A group of professionals that use a lot of time to make sure that the software they are creating is usable, bug free and has no security problems

2) Continuous updates to increase the number of features and functionality

3) Support and documentation to help you use it

And the best of all: Easy to use admin tools so that everyone can create a website without even having to dwell with the code.

How’s the future looking?

We are currently just at the starting point of the CMS boom, supported by the competition and huge interest in this domain. In the following years we’ll probably see their number increase daily to fill out the gaps that other software neglect.

The content management systems have created a small revolution in the way websites are created, helping the www gain in quality and interest. Almost every internet-able user can now build his own website, thus making the web a richer place for all of us.

Which is the best free website hosting site?

October 28th, 2009

I want to know a good free website hosting site that gives your own subdomain e.g. mysite.maindomain.com that also has 50MB+ of storage and PHP and MySQL or ASP/ASP.NET support. I’ve tried 110mb.com, seems Ok but has redirects on some of my links and have tried brinkster but doesn’t have enough storage. FTP access would also be preferable. Thanks in advance.
