A lot of info there.

Usually all we need is the make and model of the desktop computer and which version of Windows you are running.

This is a regular PCI video card, so it should work if you have an open slot. Be aware though that you may have an option for an “upgrade” to this card if you have an open AGP or PCI-E slot available.

I can’t find this specific system (missing something in the model #) but all the “Guppy” based motherboards only have PCI expansion slots.

So yes it will work in the motherboard.
As for watts needed: You should be ok. Just make sure you disable the on-board video card.

Is there a way to make a webpage without a web host?

January 30th, 2009

Is it possible to make a website without being hosted on a web hosting site. Can I make a web page using only a computer and the internet ?
I seen webpages where they use there
IP adress as URL.

You would need to install the web server software on your machine, pay extra for a fixed IP address (may also need to upgrade to a business broadband account), set a fixed private IP address on the pc and set port forwarding on the router for any services you want to offer. You need to register a domain name, configure it's dns to point to your machine, and set up mx (mail server) records for your email.

Looking for a web host?

January 30th, 2009

I need to find a web host for my web page. I have found millions of places to host them. I am looking for someone to tell me a good one, reviews, etc. I need alot of transfer capacity cuz it is a photography web site. I would also like the possibility of paypal or something like that.

If you like to create websites (usually you will end up more than 1 website, I got more than 100 websites in about 6 months' time), go for multiple web hosting services where you could host all your websites in one account.

I would like to suggest following webhosting which I use, they are excellent.

Hostmonster http://www.hostmonster.com/track/ryukenden/

They offer hosting of "unlimited domains" and you will get massive webspace of 300000 MB (300 GB ). They only charge $5.95/month and they offer "a free Domain Name" and installing service called "Fantastico". By using Fantastico, you could create own forum, photo gallery, shopping cart (e-commerce),your own auction site and your own blogs within few seconds. They also offer "Free Website Builder" as well.
Visit the site to check details.

Dynamic URLs based on server root with PHP?

January 30th, 2009

I'm trying to setup a site to use dynamic URLs based on the the root of my paid, non-dedicated server's site. My problem is that if I use a full URL, I.E. http://www.blah.bla/folder/page.bla, if get the error "URL file-access is disabled in the server configuration." This was from the following script:

$server_name=
$_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'];
$server_root=
"http://www." . $server_name;
include
("$server_root/ blah/page.bla");

(I did those new lines after the "=" signs because Yahoo was cutting them off and a space between $server_root/ and blah/)
So I then tried this:

$envhome=$_ENV['HOME'];
$page=
$envhome."blah/page.bla";
include ("$page");

(Again, new line after "="…)
This returned this error: "open_basedir restriction in effect."

Now this is really starting to piss me off because I believe I'm coming to the realization that my host is very cheap and makes you pay for the higher priced accounts for decent features. (To be continued in "details" section)
Also, if it helps, I have PHPBB 3 running just fine in the /forums/ directory. I doubt it, mostly because it's a flat file directory structure, but maybe there's a function used in there that works? Thanks in advance.
…By the way, does anyone else think this site is pretty incompetent for programming questions because of the 1000 character limit and it cutting off lines, ending them with "…"?
Oh, and the reason for the dynamic links is that the page may be run where it's at or it may be included into another page.
…Oh ya, and I do NOT have .htaccess even though the file is actually in the main ftp directory. I mean, it's there, just not functioning under my account.
I swear, whenever I finally give up and post a question, the answer comes to me VERY fast! I found a solution by using:

$document_root=
$_SERVER['DOCUMENT_ROOT'];
$server_root=
realpath($document_root);
include("$server_root/ folder/page.bla");

(Yes, new lines after the "=" signs and a space between server_root/ and folder/)
However, is there a more efficient/professional way of doing this? Will give a best answer…

You're running into PHP's safe mode restrictions. You can read more about it here: http://www.php.net/manual/en/features.safe-mode.php

Safe mode is usually turned on when your ISP's server is providing shared hosting. It tries to prevent access to other user's code/data, but as you've discovered, it's a bit of a band-aid.

It also helps prevent certain kinds of cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks where an attacker can alter variables your PHP scripts are using to maintain state that might be used to include other PHP scripts. How bad would it be if one of your include statements included code from http://attacker.com/? Often, the attacker would have control of your web site and possibly the web server itself.

Also, yes, YA's truncation of longer lines is a real pain because most askers posting code don't notice the truncation, so helping them is often very difficult, if not impossible.

is there any web hosting is free without the ads on it?

January 30th, 2009

I NEED TO DEVELOP A WEBSITE FOR MY NATION SO I NEED A FREE WEBSITE WITHOUT ANY ADS ON IT

If it is completely free AND there are no ads.. how long do you think the hosting company would be able to stay in business? I would prefer something a little more reliable.

Where we can host a web page with free domain name without price?

January 30th, 2009

Where we can host a web page with free domain name without price?

To host your site for free, I would highly recommend the following 2 sites.

Awardspace -> www.awardspace.com (PHP + MySQL)
50webs -> www.50webs.com

Both of these sites allow you to host for free and does not have any advertisement pop ups like those provided by geocities.

I have sites hosted on both the companies. Example
Awardspace -> http://www.wanginternet.com
50webs -> http://cctvcamera.50webs.com

Also, read a review I wrote on Awardspace at http://www.wanginternet.com/free-web-hosting-with-no-advertising.htm

Hope it helps, feel free to ask me for any additional help required.

How much of web development happens on the server or by the host?

January 30th, 2009

I am wanting to get beyond simply writing html code and designing nice looking pages and I want to learn more abotu content rich, dynamic, database driven websites.

I have heard that if you want to have dynamic material on your site a lot of it depends on your host and your hosts server. Like if you want to run cold fusion programming that your server must support it. Or if you want to use perl, php, server sife includes.

I don't even know what much of that really means. This is what I want to learn about.

Specifically, I want to know right now how much of dynamic content is actually dependent on the host.

I would like to use sql for my database as that is what I have edited in the past. Does my host and server need to know this? Do they need to do anything for this to work and will they charge extra?
But what exactly is backend? What is application framework. I have na idea and I have heard these terms dozens of times but its never been explained- even by IT professionals. I want to learn this stuff but no one is willing to TALK about it. Yes, I can pick up a book ( I have and will regarding web developing). But I want to hear some of backend developing 101 from a person willing to explain it in plain english.

First of all, what happens with a normal web page is the user's browser sends in a web address, the web server sends back a static text file called "whatever.html" and the browser interprets and displays it.

With a dynamic web page, the browser sends the name of a data file (whatever.php, whatever.perl, whatever.asp, etc.), often with parameters attached (form data and hidden fields). The server sends that to the proper program, which processes the data (accessing databases or other files on the server as necessary) and sends back a text file in html format, which the browser then displays.

That is, all the work is being done on the server. (By the way, a "Web Host" is just a name for a "Web Server" which you are leasing space on.)

You need your site hosted on a server which supports the programming language and database you're going to use. Each of these are software which has to be installed on the server, so there may be a charge (or it may be included as features in the bundle you pay for. Perl is often included, for example.)

Basically, if you're using PHP or Perl you want a Linux/Unix server, if you're using ASP, you want a Windows based server.

The database program you use also has to be installed on the server. On a Linux system, MySQL is probably the most common, and it works nicely with PHP and Perl. I'm not sure what is used on Windows servers beyond Access (which is OK for small applications) and MS SQL Server, both of which (like anything Microsoft) will cost. Cold Fusion is expensive as well, though there's a free version you can install locally for development.

SQL is the query language used by every major database system (from Access to Oracle), so that's not going to affect your choice much.

If you're really low-budget, it's possible to do up a simple dynamic website using Perl as the language and keeping your data in tab-delimited text files. I've done this, but it's tedious and I don't recommend it for a sizeable project.
